Barkley Sound Charters

Barkley Sound is found on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It is approximately 24 km wide and is broken up into three channels by 2 Island groups; The Broken Group and Deer Islands. There are two main ways to acscess Barkley Sound, PortAlberni and Uclulet. Barkley Sound was named by a British sea captain Charles William Barkley after his visit in 1787, to trade sea otter pelts. There are two main communities located at the entrance of the sound, Ucluelet an the west and Bamfield on the east. Barkley Sound is a paradise for any angler seeking trophy sized Chinook King, and Coho (Silvers). Barkley Sound is the primary feeding grounds for fish headed to the Fraser, Columbia and other United States rivers.  It is the destination for over a million salmon returning home every year.  The fishing technique for this area is trolling with anchovies, herring, spoons and hoochies. Fishing depths of 20 to 50 feet where feeding fish hit hard. Every August thru to September Barkley Sound is home for 50,000 25-50 pound Robertson Creek Chinook.   The daily limit is 2 Chinook and 2 Coho per day with a 2 day possession limit of 4 Chinook and 4 Coho per person.

There is a 7, 14 and 20 mile bank off of Barkley Sound.  Where we fish for feeder Chinooks 8-20 pounds and migrating Chinooks 20-50 pounds, chicken Halibuts 10-30 pounds and migrating Halibuts larger and don’t forget the frisky silver bright Coho. We mooch for Halibut with pilchard, herring, octopus, squid, mudrakers, spinnows and an assortment of other jigs. We troll for Chinook with brass spoons, plugs, flashers with hoochies and coyote spoons. Also bait herring and anchovy. Limits come fast when you’re fishing offshore. Vast amounts of pilchard and herring school in these waters which provide primary feeding grounds for the large schools of Chinook, Coho and Halibut. Fast and furious biting action that makes for a very fulfilling charter.

Offshore fishing action is hard to match. Sightings of whales, porpoises, dolphins and lots of other marine life is what you will encounter on this offshore adventure as well as some of  the finest fishing action that the British Columbia coast has to offer. So don’t forget your camera and cooler.
