The Alberni Inlet is a fjord forty kilometers inland from Barkley Sound B.C. There are several rivers that drain into the Inlet which support the rich Salmon runs and fishing. It is the largest and longest inlet on Vancouver Island (26miles). At the head of the inlet is the city of Port Alberni. Port Alberni has the largest salmon return on Vancouver Island. Port Alberni is known as the salmon capital of the world. Inlet fishing goes from mid June to the end of September. It is very desirable; the waters are calm and have lake like conditions. On average 600-800 thousand Sockeye, 50-70 thousand Chinook and 60-100 thousand Coho fin inside the calm Alberni Inlet waters thru June to September.
INLET FISHING:
SOCKEYE:
Sockeye are the first salmon to return to the Alberni Inlet. The hottest time to fish for Sockeye is from June 20 to July 20. The best time to fish for Sockeye is early morning and it is not uncommon for having 2 to 3 fish on at a time. Sockeye school in large numbers in the first 5 miles of the Alberni Inlet. In 2003 8 hundred thousand Sockeye returned to the Alberni Inlet. The limit for Sockeye is 4 per license per day (subject to change).
CHINOOK KING:
This salmon species is the second to enter the Inlet. Chinook are the largest of the salmon species. Fishing starts end of July and goes to middle of September. Early morning fishing is best for catching. It is just like the saying says “first ‘light’ takes the ‘bite’”. Chinook can weigh from 25-50 pounds. In 2003 50 thousand Chinook returned to the Inlet.
COHO (SILVERS):
Coho is the last salmon species to enter the Inlet. Coho fishery starts in the beginning of September. Fresh schools of Coho enter the Inlet everyday. Fishing is best in the morning. In 2003 100 thousand returned to the Alberni Inlet.
PORT ALBERNI GETTING HERE:
- Highways are well marked from ferry terminals all the way to Port Alberni
- Port Alberni is approximately 1 and a half hours from Departure Bay Nanaimo
- Duke Point ferry terminal Nanaimo is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes away from Port Alberni
- Victoria ferry terminals are approximately 2 and half hours away from Port Alberni
If traveling to Vancouver Island by ferry, making reservations With B.C. Ferry’s is a good idea. Summer months are very busy for ferry travel.
Guests flying into Vancouver International airport there is a connection flight from Vancouver to Port Alberni by K.D. Air which is located at the south end of the international airport. This will get you to Port Alberni were rental cars and taxi services are offered. You also have the option to fly into Nanaimo or Comox airport. Where there are rental cars offered.
